"Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen." (Heb 11:1)

Faith is "substance"–spiritual reality made sure to the soul. It is a foundation that supports the soul, and assures it of the certainty of God, Christ, and salvation. Faith makes God real to the individual, so that neither His Person nor promises are questioned. The things for which we "hope" are of particular emphasis in this verse. These are things God has promised, but which have not yet appeared. Faith makes them real to us, so that we shape our lives around them, even though we have no tangible proof of them. It substantiates the things of God to us, guaranteeing our hearts of the applicability of His promises to us, and being assured of them.

Faith is "evidence"–proof that God, Christ, their accomplishments and promises, are not only true, but accessible. Faith requires no other "evidence" than itself. It delivers to the soul a persuasion and conviction that have no doubts or fears. Without any evidence from the temporal realm, faith is convinced that God "is, and that He is a Rewarder of them that diligently seek Him" (Heb 11:6). Faith proves to the soul that God is real, His promises are true, and the world and all that is in it are going to pass away. Faith never seeks evidence or proof, but moves those possessing it to move out upon the Word of the Lord.

The notion that physical evidence helps faith is absurd, for faith is itself all the proof the soul needs. Faith never doubts, draws back, or is uncertain. It always takes hold of the truth, relies upon God, and rejoices in Christ Jesus. Faith never disobeys, rebels, or is indifferent to the commandments and direction of the Lord. It never staggers at the promises of God, or views His Word as foolish, inaccurate, or unreasonable. It always obeys, regardless of the circumstances or the apparent difficulties that confront the individual.

Faith never puts the individual at a disadvantage, and one is never profited by a lack of it. God never ignores faith, and Satan always opposes it. No person with faith will ever be ashamed or disappointed. No person without faith will realize the blessing of God, for without faith "it is impossible to please God" (Heb 11:6). Faith brings "understanding" to the believer (Heb 11:3), and enables him to obtain a "good report" from God Himself (Heb 11:2).

It makes good sense to "fight the good fight of faith" (1 Tim 6:12). Everything, including your eternal destiny, hinges upon it. Faith will never provoke you to withdraw from God or be fearful of your enemies. No wonder it is called "like precious faith" (2 Pet 1:1).
