"And David said, What have I now done? Is there not a cause?" (1 Samuel 17:29)

The times were hard, and David was young. The Philistines "gathered together their armies for battle," penetrated the land belonging to Judah, and "pitched between Shochoh and Azekah, in Ephesdammim," a place where Joshua had once routed the Amorites. King Saul and the men of Israel also gathered together "and set the battle in array against the Philistines." Of this occasion it is written, "And the Philistines stood on a mountain on the one side, and Israel stood on a mountain on the other side: and there was a valley between them."
A champion swaggered out of the Philistine camp to taunt the Israelites. He was Goliath of Gath, and "he was over nine feet tall."NIV He wore a bronze helmet and a bronze coat of scaled armor that weighed 125 pounds. His legs were covered with bronze sheaves from the knees downward, and "a bronze javelin was slung on his back."NIV He carried a massive spear with an iron point that weighed fifteen pounds, and his shield-bearer went before him. He challenged the Israelites to produce a man to fight with him. The winner of the skirmish would gain the victory for the rest of the army. No need for everyone to fight. When "Saul and all Israel heard those words, they were dismayed and greatly afraid." Goliath continued this formidable challenge for forty days, presenting himself every morning and every evening.
Now young David enters the picture, the youngest of Jesse's eight sons, who was caring for his father's sheep. His three oldest brothers were with Saul, and Jesse sent David with some food for his brothers, and also told him, "See how your brothers are and bring back some assurance from them."NIV When David arrived, he quickly went to his brothers and talked with them. While he was talking, Goliath came out and again roared his challenge to Israel. This time David heard him. He inquired what would be given to the one defeating this giant, and was told. After being chided by his older brother Eliab, David asked this question: "Is there not a cause?" You remember the God-honoring outcome of David's confrontation with Goliath.
There are still noble causes for those with eyes to see–battles to be fought, and victories to be won. God is still looking for someone with a good heart and strong faith to whom He can give the victory, causing him to triumph. There is no reason why that person cannot be you. You may presently be engaged in, what some consider to be, lowly work. But if you strengthen yourself in the Lord, the time when come when God will call upon you to fight the battle.
