"I am the Root and the Offspring of David, and the bright and morning star." (Rev 22:16)

Root and Offspring of David. These two words, "root" and "offspring," are expressions of Sovereignty. "The Root" means that the Lord brought David into the world. In His pre-incarnate state, Christ caused David to be born and rise to the throne. David owed his origin and position to the Lord. "The Offspring" means that Jesus was the premier Person in the progeny of David. He is the One God promised to David – One who would occupy the throne, and exercise a rule, that would never end. Jesus was both the "root" and the "branch" of David (Jer 23:5; 33:15). He was at once both the Cause and the Effect!
Many teach that Christ's association with David has not yet come; that this is to occur in a coming Messianic reign upon the earth. However, the Holy Spirit has related this with Christ's incarnation, resurrection, salvation, and the Gospel. As we will see, there is a remarkable consistency in this declaration.
In the matter of His Sovereignty, Jesus is related to "David the king." God promised David a ruler would be seated upon His throne forever. Jesus is that Ruler. It is important to note that Christ's identity with David pertains to His redemptive role. "An account of the genealogy of Jesus the Messiah, the Son of David, the son of Abraham" (Matt 1:1). "As Jesus went on from there, two blind men followed him, crying loudly, "Have mercy on us, Son of David!"" (Matt 9:27). "The crowds that went ahead of him and that followed were shouting, "Hosanna to the Son of David! Blessed is the one who comes in the name of the Lord! Hosanna in the highest heaven!"" (Matt 21:9). "Son of David" relates to salvation, deliverance, and rescue.
A Raised Descendant of David. "Remember Jesus Christ, raised from the dead, a descendant of David--that is my gospel" (2 Tim 2:8).
Key of David. "These things saith He that is holy, He that is true, He that hath the key of David, He that openeth, and no man shutteth; and shutteth, and no man openeth" (Rev 3:7).
Sure Mercies of David. "And as concerning that He raised him up from the dead, now no more to return to corruption, He said on this wise, I will give you the sure mercies of David" (Acts 13:34).
Lord and Christ. "For David is not ascended into the heavens: but he saith himself, The Lord said unto my Lord, Sit thou on My right hand, until I make Thy foes Thy footstool. Therefore let all the house of Israel know assuredly, that God hath made that same Jesus, whom ye have crucified, both Lord [the one to sit upon the throne] and Christ [the One anointed to effect promised deliverance and reconciliation]" (Acts 2:34-36).
