"For He shall give His angels charge over thee, to keep thee in all thy ways. They shall bear thee up in their hands, lest thou dash thy foot against a stone." (Psalm 91:11-12)
Occasionally the Lord gives us a glimpse of what is happening behind the scenes, where human vision cannot penetrate, and natural senses and abilities are impotent. These are realities that would never be known if the Lord did not divulge them to us. Had He not, in His infinite love, revealed them to us, they would have remained unnoticed and unknown, even though they continued to occur for our benefit. The text before us reveals this kind of thing.
The ninety-first Psalm unveils the care God has for His children, protecting them in the midst of unspeakable dangers. This promise is for those who "dwell in the secret place of the Most High" (91:1), who live in the presence of the Lord, delighting in His Person and ways. For such souls, the Lord is their "Refuge" and "Fortress," delivering them from the "fowler and the noisome pestilence" (v 2). Even when destruction destroys at midday, God promises, "A thousand shall fall at thy side, and ten thousand at thy right hand; but it shall not come nigh thee" (v 7). Our text continues by revealing God will dispatch angels to actually carry you through hazzards and circumstances that threaten your very life. He will command them to guard you in all of your ways, and "lift you up in their hands, so that you will not strike your foot against a stone." NIV The idea is that of making progress in your journey to glory, even though danger is around you.
This is such a prominent promise that even the devil knows it. You may recall He cited it to Jesus during His wilderness temptation (Matt 4:6). You may also recall that Jesus rejected His suggestion, saying "It is written again, Thou shalt not tempt the Lord thy God" (Matt 4:6-7). Tempting the Lord would involve unwisely placing ourselves in danger in order to put the word of God to the test. In such a case, angels are not dispatched to our aid. Angels bear us up in "their hands" as we are living by faith, remaining in fellowship with God–"the secret place of the Most High." Through their ministry we are able to finish the race, complete our course, and keep the faith. Because of them, we are allowed to endure "to the end." The phrase "in their hands" denotes the gentleness and alertness of the holy angels. They take the "charge" given to them seriously, and will allow no harm to come to us that interferes with tasks we have been assigned. Whether it is an Apostle like Paul, an evangelist like Timothy, a holy couple like Acquila and Priscilla, a godly woman like Phoebe, the struggling church at Philadelphia, OR YOU, you can count on the care of the angels while you walk with God.
